Noel Niagara: Works by Niagara Composers

On Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007 at 3 p.m., the Niagara Vocal Ensemble will showcase its remarkable range and quality of sound with engaging works of the season at the Concordia Lutheran Seminary Chapel at Brock University.

Under the direction of founding conductor, Dr. Harris Loewen, the 13 female voices of the Niagara Vocal Ensemble have gained a reputation as one of Niagara's leading vocal choirs. All works performed are written or arranged by Niagara composers, complimented with a number of lyrics by Niagara poet-lyricists - thus the title Noel Niagara: Works by Niagara Composers.
The program includes works by composers Anne Adams, Matthew Tran-Adams, Pnina (Penny) Blake, John Butler, Harris Loewen, Timothy Phelan, Laura Thomas, Ronald Tremain, as well as others. The character of the program ranges widely from sentimental to joyful, with works performed both a cappella and accompanied by local pianist, Lesley Kingham, and guitarist, John Kott.

This concert is part of the Brock University Choral Series, a relatively new series that has emerged over the last few years. Former semi-finalists in the CBC National Amateur Choir Competition and a regular guest ensemble in the Stratford Festival of Canada concert series, the Niagara Vocal Ensemble has been closely connected with the Choral Series and with Brock's Department of Music.

Such programs from the Department of Music are a key part of the School of Fine and Performing Arts' mandate to connect the community with the breadth of talent and creativity at Brock University.

Noel Niagara: Works by Niagara Composers will be held at Concordia Lutheran Seminary Chapel, Brock University, on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $15, and are available at the Centre for the Arts Box Office, 905-688-5550, ext. 3257, or at the door.

Polish American Journal Releases Polish Village Christmas, Vol. II

Over 500 Years of Tradition on One CD

BUFFALO, N.Y. - As a follow-up to its highly-successful 1994 release, "Polish Village Christmas", the Polish American Journal has released the second in its collection of favorite Polish American Christmas carols, "Polish Village Christmas, Vol. II".

This CD features performances by four Polka Music Hall of Fame artists: Lenny Gomulka, Mitch Biskup, Jackie Libera, and Mike Nowakowski; and award-winning musicians and vocalists John Bartley, Eddie Biegaj, Patricia Blust, John Jaworski, Kyle Kohan, Mark Kohan, Jim Kucharski, Joe Macielag, Robin Pegg, and Larry Trojak. (See Biographies below for more information on each artist).

Unlike the first Christmas CD, which reanimated some lost and obscure koledy (carols), the new recording contains nineteen favorite songs that form the book of standard Polish carols.

Since the Middle Ages, carols have been at the heart of the Polish Christmas. First known records of melodies and texts date back to the 15th and 16th centuries, some even earlier.

There are two distinct types of Polish carols: the koledy, or church carols; and pastoralki, folk songs also referred to as shepherd carols. Both are featured on the new recording.

Koledy, among the most beautiful and moving of Polish carols, can trace their origins largely to monks in cloisters. The hymn Aniol pasterzom mowil ("Shepherds Heard the Angels Say"), for example, is a Polish translation of a Latin carol.

Although both forms are religious in context, the pastoralki are based on lively rhythmic dance forms, such as the "Krakowiak" or the "Mazurka". These lively carols are suitable for family singing around a Christmas tree and at social gatherings such caroling from home to home or at Christmas plays and pageants. Imaginative, their lyrics relate the story of the Nativity through familiar surroundings. In pastoralki, shepherds are the first to greet Jesus, a Polish fiddler lulls the newborn Savior to sleep, and Bethlehem is a village in Poland.

In addition to church and folk origins, many others carols are based on verses and prayers written by Poland's great poets.

The first Christmas recording featured performers mainly from the Buffalo area. In addition to Western New York favorites Joe Macielag, Robin Pegg, and Mark and Kyle Kohan, this follow-up project is national in scope, adding vocalists and musicians from Chicago, Minneapolis, Toledo, and Ludlow, Mass.

This combination of talent and traditional material makes this CD a winner before the shrink-wrap is removed, said PAJ Polka Magazine editor Steve Litwin. Growing up with this music and these musicians adds to the spirit of the project; it's one I wholly recommend to all.

PVC II is available from the Polish American Journal, P.O. Box 328, Boston, NY 14025, on-line at www.polamjournal.com, or by calling (800) 422-1275. The CD is $15.00 plus $6.95 for shipping and handling.

Kingdom Bound's CityFest Celebrates 20th Year Nov. 17th

Buffalo, N.Y. (November 12, 2007) – CityFest, an annual day-long concert event taking place in downtown Buffalo, will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year with an entirely new line-up of artists and speakers on Saturday, November 17. To accommodate the hundreds of young people expected to attend, CityFest will take place from 1 – 9pm at the downtown Buffalo Christian Center, 512 Pearl St., in Buffalo, behind Studio Arena. Doors open at 12:30pm. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.

According to spokesman Mark Weber, of BuffaloChristian.com, CityFest is sponsored by Kingdom Bound Ministries of Williamsville. Kingdom Bound is best known for its annual Christian music festival held each August at Darien Lake.

“CityFest is kind of like Kingdom Bound for the city of Buffalo,” says Weber. “It's a chance for anyone and everyone to come out for a day of intense Gospel hip-hop and reggae music with an urban flavor. Best of all, it's free, so lots of families find it's a great way to spend time together in a family-friendly environment, listening to music with positive messages.”

CityFest will feature music from a variety of urban artists, including Dunamis, a Jamaican reggae artist; Imagen, a Puerto Rican reggaeton artist; Mahogany Jones, the Queen of Free-Style; Lil' Dre, a Floridian rapper; and Roxy, a 15-year-old hip-hop prodigy. The day will also feature speaker Moses Aguayo from Rochester.

Rapper Michael Peace, the event organizer, encourages everyone in Buffalo and its surrounding suburbs to check out CityFest, noting that it's “highly energetic and youthful.”

CD Release Party for Mike Criscione's new CD "Balance"

A CD release party will be held for Mike Criscione's new CD "Balance" on December 1st at 8:30PM. The event will take place at The Central Park Grill which is located at 2519 Main St. in Buffalo NY (836-9466). There will be a $4 cover charge at the door. Opening the show will be Rob Falgiano. Closing the event will be The Scott Helfrich Project.

"Two-time winner of "Best Original Guitarist" at the Buffalo Music Awards, Mike Criscione's tenure as a musician has taken him through a number of angular phases. In his unlikely evolution from progressive rock guitarist, to singer/songwriter, to the live looping artist, right angle turns have been the norm. No stranger to the Buffalo music scene, Criscione cut his teeth playing with a variety of western New York rock bands most notably the critically acclaimed Riley, winner of 1998's "Best Original Rock Band" at the Buffalo Music Awards. From 2000 until 2004, he was a regular fixture in the solo acoustic circuit, often employing live looping of multiple instruments.

His current recording, BALANCE, features Criscione performing on over ten different instruments. Completely self-recorded, mixed, and mastered in his newly designed project studio, this, his first solo release, was recorded over a two and half year period. It's title is in reference to the rather unorthodox manner in which the record was completed. The overwhelming majority of the time spent on this project was between 5:30am and 7:00am, early enough in the day to not interfere with his family and day job. The tracks on BALANCE cover an impressive array of styles interwoven within an acoustic/rock foundation. Not only do they resonate with the full spectrum of modern instrumentation, but also (at times) complete orchestral scores and world percussion."

These are the chances that a child born today will be affected by Autism, a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person's lifetime. It is part of a group of disorders known as autism spectrum disorders (ASD) occurring in all racial, ethnic, and social groups and four times more likely to strike boys than girls. Recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that all toddlers be screened twice before their second birthday.
In its mildest form, it impairs a person's ability to communicate and relate to others. At its worst, it can be totally debilitating, leaving the person incapable of relating to the world around them and shut off from the people who love them the most. While there is no cure, there are excellent programs in Western New York whose goals are to bring those affected back to the world.

Buffalo Musicians Against Autism was begun to help these programs reach that goal.

All proceeds from the show and sale of the CD and the benefit show will go to Autistic Services of WNY, The WNY Chapter of the Autism Society of America, Summit Educational Resources, and the Niagara BOCES Autism Program.

Gospel Music Minute to debut on WUFO 1080 AM this Monday

Buffalo, N.Y. (November 9, 2007) – The Gospel Music Minute update, a locally-produced, 3-minute spot, will begin airing twice daily on Buffalo's WUFO 1080 AM this Monday, November 12. Produced by BuffaloChristian.com's Mark Weber and WUFO's Duane Price, the Gospel Music Minute update will bring area listeners news about music artists and events from both a local and national perspective. Updates will air weekdays at 8:35 a.m. and 4:35 p.m. on the station.

The Gospel Music Minute is the brainchild of local Christian events promoter Mark Weber, who runs both BuffaloChristian.com, a regional site detailing Christian and family-friendly events in Toronto, Buffalo, and Rochester, and ChristianMusicDaily.com, a popular, internationally-known site with music news, reviews, and interviews covering a wide variety of artists and genres.

“I attended the recent Christian Heritage Festival at the Buffalo Christian Center downtown, and met some executives from WUFO who were impressed with my musical knowledge and pleasant demeanor,” says Weber. “They asked me to visit their station, and I suggested to them that I could share Gospel music news with their listeners. They loved the idea, so it's a go. WUFO has welcomed me with open arms.”

Weber, who is white, is unique because he's on a station with an almost exclusively black staff and listening audience.“

One of the things I aim to do is to help build bridges between whites, blacks, and people of all colors and ethnicities here in the Buffalo area,” says Weber. “And music is something that connects and can help unite us all, so I see my being at WUFO as a chance to help network together lots of different people, while informing them about artists worth listening to and events worth attending.”

WUFO 1080 AM is owned by Sheridan Broadcasting Corporation of Pittsburgh. The station is currently celebrating 45 years of continuous operation in the Buffalo area.

ADAM ZADOK MOVES ON TO BODOG SEMI-FINALS!

Local Buffalo artist gaining national attention

FUSE TV, the premier cable music video channel for rock, alternative, punk, hardcore, emo, and indie music has teamed up with BODOG Music, the record company owned by BODOG Entertainment Group to sponsor FUSE TV’s BODOG Battle of the Bands, the reality TV show that scours the nation looking for America’s next big unsigned rock band.

Adam Zadok, (pronounced zâ-dock) the up-and-coming Buffalo based singer/songwriter who fronts a full rock band, beat out thousands of submissions nationwide to compete in the first round of the BODOG Battle of the Bands. On October 14th, the first round saw the band capture the attention of fans and judges alike propelling them to the semi-final round to be held at Cleveland’s legendary Peabody’s Concert Club on November 27th, 2007.

An accomplished acoustic performer, Adam has transformed his acoustic material into high energy rock songs. This hybrid of melody driven, power pop has propelled Adam and company into the modern rock genre. The comparison of the band’s refreshing new sound can best be described as Matthew Sweet meets the Foo Fighters.

Thousands of bands throughout the country will vie for the BODOG $1 million record deal, each having to succeed at a series of elimination rounds showcasing their music in front of local fans and a panel of 3 discriminating judges. Subsequent showcase rounds occur in different US cities culminating with the final 10 bands appearing on the popular reality TV show. In late November, destiny will bring Adam Zadok’s world face to face with a national audience in Cleveland, Ohio.

National exposure couldn’t happen at a better time for the band. Adam’s latest CD entitled “State of the Union” is receiving airplay at over 150 radio stations throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America, including Buffalo’s own WEDG 103.3 and 107.7 The Lake.
In addition to the BODOG opportunity, MTV has licensed Adam’s music for future show productions. Based on the strength of the song, "Struck Out," the second track off “State of the Union,” MTV producers realized the potential of the power pop song and added it to the current season of their popular reality TV dating show, “NEXT.”
