SUPERJAM 2008, Sunday June 1, 2008, 1-9PM

Creekside Grove, William & Union, Cheektowaga, NY

Superjam is the blues society of Western New York’s annual musical event and fundraiser showcasing local talent. The blues society of WNY is affiliated with the Blues Foundation in Memphis, TN and has been in existence for approximately sixteen years. Our purpose is to educate the public about the blues and its history, to promote blues music and to preserve it’s tradition as one of the truly great and original American art forms. Some of the ways we do this is by holding educational presentations in schools, holding a monthly amateur jam and by holding the Memphis bound contest which allows one local blues band a one solo/duo act to go to Memphis to compete on a national scale for various prizes including recording time, equipment and gigs at various blues festivals. Our quarterly magazine Bluesbeat, which was created by and is run by Rich and Sharon Schneider, is one of the most comprehensive and professional magazines of it’s kind. This year’s event features the Mark Winsick Band, JJ Moscato & Blue Avenue, Willie Haddath & Sue Kincaid Band, Cruizin Deuces, Eloise Laguerre, Jack Civaletto, Stevie B & the Rhythm Rockers, Gregg Juke Band & the Mighty No Stars, Big Tobacco,

Donna Rose & Jimmy Wozniak, Paul Ianello & Lissy K, Todd Eberwine Band, Lynn Fredericks and Shaky Ray.

Double Take Blues Band, and John Rose. Superjam is a family event and there is food and alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages available to purchase. The event is rain or shine. The admission fee for an all day pass is $12 for blues society members and $15 for non members. Visit our website for more information at http://www.wnyblues.org/

New York State Parks, Artpark & Co. Extend Licensing Agreement

Not-for-Profit to Continue Programming Park Events Thru 2017

(Lewiston, NY) The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation today officially announced a 10-year extension of its licensing agreement with Artpark & Company to continue programming events at the Lewiston, New York venue thru December 2017. Like the previous agreement, State Parks will be responsible for maintaining park buildings and grounds.

“The entire board of Artpark & Company, Inc is very excited about the new 10 year operating agreement with New York State Parks,” said Artpark & Company Chairman Christopher H. Brown. “The accord recognizes the importance of the substantial contribution Artpark & Company has made to the quality of life in Western New York by delivering access to visual and performance art for all ages and interests. We thank Commissioner Carol Ash, and the Western New York division under Mark Thomas for their leadership, vision and courtesies extended during this process. All of us at Artpark & Company look forward to the next 10 years with great expectations for the arts in Western New York.”

“I am delighted that we have been able to reach this historic agreement with Artpark & Company. Artpark has long been a wonderful partner in delivering arts and culture offerings in Western New York and we look forward to many more years of outstanding programming. This ten year contract will allow us to develop new programs and make capital investments that will be cherished by visitors of all ages,” said NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Carol Ash.

Artpark, whose official name is “The Earl W. Brydges Artpark”, is a 150-acre New York State Park along the scenic Niagara River Gorge in the Town of Lewiston that was established by the state in 1974. Since its inception, Artpark has been a unique and renowned venue for the visual and performing arts. The park contains an indoor theater, an outdoor amphitheater, venues for artists and artisans to produce and display their works, various areas used for children’s arts activities, numerous hiking trails and other settings for wildlife recreation. It is an entertainment, educational, recreational and inspirational destination for residents and visitors to Western New York.

Details about upcoming capital improvement projects will be announced next month.

Background
During its first twenty years, Artpark received significant funding from New York State to support its acclaimed arts programs. However, funding from the state was significantly decreased, and in 1997 control of Artpark’s programs and operations was transferred to a nonprofit organization called Artpark & Company, Inc., with the state maintaining ownership.

As part of the plan to transfer control of the operations of Artpark, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation established a license agreement with Artpark & Company, Inc. Artpark & Company, Inc. is a registered not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 Arts and Education organization.

A Board of Directors controls Artpark & Company, and also directs Artpark’s management team. Over the past ten years Artpark & Company has worked within a limited budget to continue running programs with a scope and quality that has continued to foster a positive reputation in the ever-changing marketplace of the performing and visual arts world.

Artpark’s board, management team and sponsors have created an environment that has attendance and revenues increasing each season. In 2004 Artpark became the summer home to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and has been voted as the best outdoor venue in Western New York by Buffalo Spree for two years running. Artpark is transforming itself into a nationally and internationally renowned cultural and entertainment venue and is becoming a key asset to the tourism and economic development in New York State, namely the Buffalo/Niagara region.

Artpark continues to receive committed support from the state’s Western New York Delegation and the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation. It receives financial support from both, as well as from various corporations and foundations.

Attendance
Under the leadership of Artpark & Company President George Osborne since 1999, park attendance reached its highest level in more than a decade with over 220,000 visitors patronizing scheduled events last summer, while another estimated 250,000 enjoyed the trails, paths, picnicking sites and fishing areas.

Estimated Event Attendance
2002: 84,000 (persons)
2003: 103,000
2004: 133,000
2005: 161,000
2006: 190,000
2007: 220,000

2008 Season
Artpark’s 2008 Season – which includes a Mainstage production of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” the BPO’s residency, big band shows, weekly concerts on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, as sculpture competition, free art activities and camps for children, a family movie night and more – gets underway on June 3. For a full schedule of events, call the Artpark Box Office at (716) 754-4375 or visit www.artpark.net.

The Earl W. Brydges Artpark is being operated by Artpark & Company, Inc. for the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation under a license agreement.

April Showers Bring International Acclaim and Chart Success in May and June: Gregg Juke & The Mighty No-Stars make the Roots Music Report Top-50

It has been an exciting year for contemporary Blues and roots-rockers Gregg Juke & The Mighty No-Stars. The release of their debut CD, “Blues Power,” on Blue Buffalo Records, has been well-received by radio programmers, the music press, and listeners worldwide, and they knew they were on to something when the album was named one of the Top-10 independent releases in the world for 2007-2008 by the IBC committee for the Blues Foundation, in Memphis, Tennesee, and coincidentally made Real Blues Magazine’s list of Top-100 new CDs. But the band was not necessarily prepared for what came next. Bandleader Gregg Juke explains-- “We found out that we were getting played on about 15-20 stations with Blues programming around the country, and around the world. Things started to snowball, and suddenly we were getting airplay in Texas, Colorado, New Jersey, Connecticut, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alaska, Minnesota, California, Florida, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and Scotland. We have also been reviewed and/or played on several international Blues websites, and reviews are coming out next month in two French magazines that cover Blues and roots music—‘Blues,’ and ‘Le Cri du Coyot’ (‘The Cry of the Coyote’).. We have been overwhelmed by the reception the CD has gotten, but we were floored when we found out that we made the Top-50 Blues Chart (#36) on the Roots Music Report (www.rootsmusicreport.com), and that we’re being picked-up by ‘Blues Deluxe,’ a syndicated show with 106 stations and over 2 million listeners! We can’t thank the fans, Blues DJ’s, and the music press enough for their support!”

All this, after an exciting year that included band-members signing endorsement deals
with several major and specialty instrument manufacturers (Barker Basses, First Act Guitars, Vic Firth International, and JC’s Drums), international recognition and airplay,
distribution worldwide through Super D One-Stop, and digital distribution on the World Wide Web through online retailers including CDBaby.com, CD-Now, iTunes, Rhapsody, PayPlay, Napster, BuyMusic, CD-Connection, Emusic, MusicMatch, MusicNet, Amazon.com, and iTunes/Yahoo Japan (the CD is still available, of course, on the band’s home website at www.MightyNoStars.com). The band has also appeared on three volumes of Buffalo, NY radio station WBFO FM’s “WBFO Gives Me The Blues” compilation CD’s, has been tapped as “band spokes-models” for a video production for the Comic Book Café, and continues to play a slew of concerts and performances, with an eye to expand their touring circuit to meet demand for the band that is being created by all of the airplay and press coverage. As a part-time music journalist himself, Gregg Juke had the opportunity to interview one of his influences and inspirations, the great Chicago bluesmen, Charlie Musselwhite.

It has been a great year indeed, but this is only the beginning for Gregg Juke & The Mighty No-Stars, who have been compared to Los Lobos, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Robert Cray, and Los Lonely Boys. They certainly bring a knowledge of world music and a rock & roll flair to their jazz-inspired take on the Blues, but the debut album (“Blues Power”) from the emerging, soulful powerhouse creates a unique sound that references the legends of the music, while showcasing an eclectic mix of songs that are at once dramatic, heartfelt, and fun.

Sixteen tracks (13 originals and 3 covers) cross the full spectrum of the Blues, and while most of the material springs from the fertile imagination of Gregg Juke, chestnuts from Peter Green, Brook Benton, and ZZ Top get the Mighty No-Stars treatment.

Gregg Juke & The Mighty No-Stars continue to live up to their watchwords of “Bringing the Blues to a whole new level” and performing and recording “Maximum Blues, Soul, and Roots-Rockin’ R&B.” The “No-Stars” moniker is an in-joke-- everyone in the band has established themselves as a solid musical commodity through years of performing and recording with other groups and artists. The band strives to present not only the best in live music, but also in live entertainment; but as Gregg says: “There were already so many ‘Joe Schmoe and The All-Stars’ bands out there, we decided to be ‘No-Stars’ instead.” Concert-goers are treated to a high-energy, high-caliber musical event. The band has a unique sound that captures the essence of the Blues in all of its stylistic varieties, but adds touches of Latin, Rock, Reggae, and Worldbeat to the mix.

Gregg Juke is available for radio or print interviews, and promo copies of the CD are available for review. For more information, visit www.MightyNoStars.com,
