Noel Niagara: Works by Niagara Composers
On Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007 at 3 p.m., the Niagara Vocal Ensemble will showcase its remarkable range and quality of sound with engaging works of the season at the Concordia Lutheran Seminary Chapel at Brock University.
Under the direction of founding conductor, Dr. Harris Loewen, the 13 female voices of the Niagara Vocal Ensemble have gained a reputation as one of Niagara's leading vocal choirs. All works performed are written or arranged by Niagara composers, complimented with a number of lyrics by Niagara poet-lyricists - thus the title Noel Niagara: Works by Niagara Composers.
The program includes works by composers Anne Adams, Matthew Tran-Adams, Pnina (Penny) Blake, John Butler, Harris Loewen, Timothy Phelan, Laura Thomas, Ronald Tremain, as well as others. The character of the program ranges widely from sentimental to joyful, with works performed both a cappella and accompanied by local pianist, Lesley Kingham, and guitarist, John Kott.
This concert is part of the Brock University Choral Series, a relatively new series that has emerged over the last few years. Former semi-finalists in the CBC National Amateur Choir Competition and a regular guest ensemble in the Stratford Festival of Canada concert series, the Niagara Vocal Ensemble has been closely connected with the Choral Series and with Brock's Department of Music.
Such programs from the Department of Music are a key part of the School of Fine and Performing Arts' mandate to connect the community with the breadth of talent and creativity at Brock University.
