Sportsmens and Buffalo Music Hall of Fame step up to save show once scheduled for TowerJam

Three-time Grammy nominee and Buffalo Music Hall of Famer Peter Case faced another cancelled homecoming show, but his loyal Buffalo supporters wouldn’t let this one slip away.
Case was scheduled to headline the August installment of the Tower Jam Concert Series, but when that event was cancelled, the Sportsmens Tavern and Buffalo Music Hall of Fame stepped in to save the triumphant return of one of Western New York’s most acclaimed musical exports, who had to cancel an area performance last year after emergency open-heart surgery in January forced him off of the road and nearly cost him his life.

Case’s recovery was thanks to more than just doctors – without insurance, he had a mountain of bills that were covered much in part by proceeds from star-studded benefits across the country, including one in his longtime hometown in the Los Angeles area hosted by T-Bone Burnett. Months later, Case emerged with a series of shows that resulted in the recording of Wig! (Yep Roc), a raw rocker called “a deliriously joyous experience” by Pop Matters and stirring talk of another Grammy nod following that of his 2007 blues opus Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John.
Here in Buffalo, he will be backed by his childhood pals and garage bandmates Jim Whitford – a fellow Buffalo Music Hall of Famer – and just announced 2010 inductee Mark Winsick. Case filled out the Buffalo band by calling on drummer Rob Lynch, having jammed with him at a previous reunion gig at the Sportsmens.

“It means a lot to me to come back to Buffalo and play,” Case said while on tour in Austin, Texas. “I go way back with these musicians, and it’s a hometown crowd and scene where I learned so much. I travel a lot, but it still feels great to get back to Buffalo, and this support means a lot.”
The Sportsmens Tavern, a longtime bastion of Buffalo music and home away from home to countless touring acts, welcomed Case with open arms, and the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame pledged their support as well. The Dawg House Band, previously scheduled to play a happy hour show, will now play an opening set.

“We’re excited to have Peter Case back at the Sportsmens, and to play with his old buddies that everyone here enjoys all the time,” said owner Dwane Hall. “I feel lucky to have him on my stage – we may not have much notice, but we’re confident that our loyal crowd will pack the place for Peter. Many of them are already big fans.”

There are a limited number of advance tickets available at The Sportsmens Tavern. There will be a $15 cover at the door, first-come, first-admitted. Western New Yorkers will have a second chance to catch Case on Sunday, when he’ll perform at the Hamburg home of Buffalo music icons Susan Tanner & Marty Boratin, minutes from where Case grew up. Winsick will also be featured at that show, as well as up-and-coming singer-songwriter Grace Stumberg. Suggested donation for the Sunday house concert is $10-20.
