Weekend, the popular Buffalo recording group that began performing in the 1970s and reunited in 1998, returns to the Hard Rock Café in Niagara Falls, NY, on Friday, February 19, 2010.
Weekend takes the stage at 8:00 for a free concert at the Hard Rock Café, 333 Prospect Street, Niagara Falls, NY (282-0007) as part of their “Free Music Friday” concert series.
The group, known for pristine vocal harmonies once compared to Crosby, Stills and Nash in a Billboard Magazine record pick in 1971, still boasts powerful vocals and strong musicianship. Playing original music as well as popular favorites spanning four decades, Weekend’s audience now consists of a new generation of fans introduced to the group by parents who brought their children to see their favorite group from the early days when Buffalo music bands packed clubs and schools seven nights a week.
Weekend was inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame in 2000, and their hit song Together is included on the first BMHOF compilation CD. They performed last November at the Hard Rock in the Hall of Fame Bands’ Friday Night Music Series and are introducing new songs at their next show.
Newest member Michael McGuire (singer with Coda and Wunderland) has added a new dimension to the bands vocals with his strong lead voice and contributes on guitar and keys. Ned Wood’s vocal arranging is reminiscent of Brian Wilson or David Crosby, and he delivers amazing keyboard skills to complement Frank Grizanti’s versatile guitar work. Twin brothers Tom and Rick Ryan (drums and bass respectively) are known for their solid foundation and groove that drives the band’s sound.
Jersey recording artist Southside Johnny raved about Weekend and told the audience it was hard to follow this band’s performance and amazing vocals when they shared the stage at Club Infinity in May of 2007. And who doesn’t remember the band’s all original music set at Artpark, warming up the crowd of almost 20,000 Styx fans on a Tuesday night in July of 2006, or a 1999 performance with the The Animals at Thursday at the Square?
Weekend promises more summer shows and is also scheduled to perform the Gateway Park Wednesday Canal Concert series on August 11, 2010.
