JUST BUFFALO LITERARY CENTER ANNOUNCES ISABEL ALLENDE’S BABEL PERFORMANCE NOW AT KLEINHANS MUSIC HALL
Buffalo, NY—Just Buffalo Literary Center is excited to announce a venue change for its final author visit of the 2008-09 Babel season on April 17, 2009 featuring Isabel Allende to Kleinhans Music Hall. Just Buffalo’s Executive Director Laurie Dean Torrell explains, “There has been such a high level of excitement and interest in this year’s series. . . This will enable us to expand participation, and for the first time offer a special student ticket rate.” The change of venue will allow more Western New Yorkers a chance to take part in an otherwise sold-out season of Babel, an acclaimed series featuring international award-winning authors, now in its second season.
General admission tickets are $30 each, with orders of three or more discounted to $25 per seat. Current Babel subscription holders may order additional tickets for $20 each. The special student rate, for individual tickets purchased with valid school ID, or student group tickets purchased by teachers in sets of 10 or more, is $10 per seat. Patron tickets include reserved seating at the event and admission to the pre-event reception with Isabel Allende at Kleinhans, which will be catered at Henry’s by Oliver’s Restaurant, and are available for $100, or $75 for current Babel Patron subscribers. Babel, a series of readings and discussions with international authors of distinction, strives to promote cross-cultural literary community building while emphasizing the dedication of the greater Buffalo area to its continued revitalization through collaborations between civic and cultural institutions; each performance is accompanied by an evening of festivities at The International Institute, highlighting the writers’ cultures. Babel’s second season also includes a continuation of “If All Of Buffalo Read The Same Book” by selecting one work by each author as a way to introduce them to Western New York, and the selection for Isabel Allende is her novel, The House of the Spirits.
Isabel Allende Llona, born in Lima, Peru on August 2, 1942, is a Chilean novelist who writes in the "magic realism" tradition, and is considered one of the first successful women novelists in Latin America. She is largely famous for her contributions to Latin-American literature, novels such as The House of the Spirits (1982) and City of the Beasts (2002), which have been hugely successful. She has written novels based in part on her own experiences, often focusing on the experiences of women, weaving myth and realism together. She currently resides in California along with her husband, having adopted American citizenship in 2003.
Allende has received many international awards, including the prestigious Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize. She is also the founder of the Isabel Allende Foundation, which is "dedicated to supporting programs that promote and preserve the fundamental rights of women and children to be empowered and protected." She has been recently called a "literary legend" by Latino Leaders magazine, which named Allende as third-most influential Latino leader in the world in their 2007 article. Her novels have been translated into 30 languages and sold more than 51 million copies.
Babel is supported by funds from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and The John R. Oishei Foundation.
