The Penderecki String Quartet on stage at Brock University

There are musicians who entertain, and then there are musicians who use the stage as a canvas for their art — the Penderecki String Quartet is such an ensemble. Performing on stage at the Sean O'Sullivan Theatre on Friday, Jan. 18, 2008 at 7:30 p.m., the quartet will delight audiences with its superb musicianship in a performance of Haydn's String Quartet Op. 77, No. 2; Mendelssohn's Op. 44, No.1, and Beethoven's Op. 74.

Performing internationally year-round, the Penderecki Quartet is one of the most celebrated chamber ensembles of its generation. Each musician brings his or her individual yet collective experience to each performancethat demonstrates a “remarkable range of technical excellence and emotional sweep,” Globe and Mail.

Formed in Poland in 1986, the Penderecki String Quartet was named for Polish composer Krysztof Penderecki. The foursome's performing schedule includes appearances at the Wieczory Arsenale Festival, Poland; Is Arti Festival, Lithuania; Rive-Gauche Concerti, Italy; Festival Internacional de Música, Venezuela; Casalmaggiore Festival, Italy; Musicarama Festival, Hong Kong; the Shanghai International Arts Festival. The quartet performs coast to coast at some of Canada's foremost concert venues, such as the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, Festival of the Sound, Festival Vancouver and Music Toronto.

The quartet’s large discography includes more than 20 recordings, including the chamber music repertoire of Johannes Brahms on both the Marquis and Electra labels, as well as a new release of the six Bela Bartok quartets under the auspices of Chamber Music in Napa Valley. The quartet has also recorded discs for CBC, CMC, EMI, United, and Artifact labels among others. Visit the Penderecki String Quartet website at www.ps4.ca
