FORMER SUPREME COURT JUSTICE SANDRA DAY O’CONNOR TO SPEAK WEDNESDAY AT CHAUTAUQUA INSTITUTION
CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. — Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor will make a return visit to Chautauqua Institution on Wednesday (Aug. 8). Justice O’Connor is set to give the morning lecture at 10:45 in the Amphitheater. In addition she will present “A Special Conversation with Sandra Day O’Connor” at 2:30 p.m. in the Hall of Philosophy. Both speaking events are co-sponsored by the Chautauqua Women’s Club, which counts Justice O’Connor as a lifetime member.
Justice O'Connor’s last visit to Chautauqua’s lecture platform was in 2004 when she gave the season-closing lecture. Justice O’Connor became the first woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court when she was appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981, breaking the last "glass ceiling" in the legal profession and further opening doors for women in all areas of law. She is the author of two books, The Majesty of the Law: Reflections of a Supreme Court Justice, and Lazy B: Growing up on a Cattle Ranch in the American Southwest.
No stranger to Chautauqua, Justice O'Connor wrote about Chautauqua for National Geographic Traveler’s “Places of a Lifetime” issue, and described it as the "life we wish we could always live.”
** No video or audio recordings will be permitted. There will also be no opportunity for an interview with Justice O’Connor.
Chautauqua Institution hosts the weekday Morning Lecture Series at 10:45 in the Amphitheater. Tickets can be purchased at the Chautauqua Box Office in the Turner Community Center on Route 394. They may also be ordered by phone at 716.357.6250 or on the Web at tickets.ciweb.org.
