BUFFALO MUSEUM OF SCIENCE HELPS TO CELEBRATE JUNETEENTH
The Buffalo Museum of Science, in partnership with Juneteenth Festival, Inc., and El Museo, will host a new summer photo exhibit, “East Side Black Photographers,” curated by El Museo and on view at 1020 Humboldt Parkway, Buffalo, through September 1. This special exhibit is included with museum admission, which is $7 adults, $6 seniors, $5 students and children over age 3. Museum members and children under age 3 are free.
During the exhibit’s opening this Thursday evening, June 14, the Channel 2 On Your Side’s “2007 Juneteenth Special,” will be previewed. Channel 2 is broadcasting the special at 7 p.m. to the WNY community. Also on Thursday evening beginning at approximately 8:30 p.m. or dusk, the public is invited to Squeaky Wheel’s Black Filmmakers Animation Series, shown outside at the Amphitheatre at the south end of the Museum/Drew Magnet School building, weather permitting. (Rain location: inside the Museum in its Auditorium).
During the Juneteenth Festival held Saturday, June 16 and Sunday, June 17 in adjacent Martin Luther King Jr. Park, the Science Museum is offering free tours of permanent exhibit Whem Ankh: The Cycle of Life in Ancient Egypt, which offers insights into daily life as lived on the banks of the lower Nile River 2,200 years ago. Festival visitors wishing to join a tour should check in with the Museum’s booth on the festival grounds. Tours will take place at 2 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, and at 1 and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Also on Sunday afternoon between 12 Noon and 5 p.m., the Museum will host Squeaky Wheel’s Black Filmmakers Animation Series along with other films by local African American filmmakers. These film showings are free and open to the public.
The Buffalo Museum of Science is the non-profit educational institution dedicated to the study and interpretation of the natural and physical sciences. Its extensive collections of over 600,000 specimens and artifacts represent all facets of the natural world with an emphasis on Western New York as well as man-made objects spanning the globe. Based at 1020 Humboldt Parkway and anchoring Buffalo’s East Side in Olmsted-designed Martin Luther King, Jr. Park since 1929, the Museum presents a wide variety of programs and services for children, teachers, families, adults, and community organizations throughout each year.
