Artpark’s Swing Season Opens with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra!

Concertgoers Will Enjoy a Sentimental Night of Music on June 25!

Artpark’s 2007 Big Band Series swings into action on June 25 with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, under the baton of conductor and original band member Buddy Morrow. Widely regarded as one of the best all-around dance bands of all-time, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra will perform at 2pm and 8pm at Artpark’s Mainstage Theater. To ensure its audience receives the full swing experience, Artpark features a giant dance floor inside its Mainstage Theater during each big band show.

The “Sentimental Gentleman of Swing” – as Dorsey was often referred to – was a master at creating warm musical moods with superb dancing and listener-friendly tempos. “I’ll Never Smile Again” was the orchestra’s largest commercial hit but the band churned out a lengthy list of legendary arrangements during its tenure, including “Embraceable You,” “Stardust,” “Once in a While,” “Summertime” and “Marie.” Dorsey’s orchestra’s remarkable ability to collaborate with – and catapult the careers of future industry superstars – Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller, Jack Leonard, Sy Oliver and Jo Stafford among them – led to Sinatra dubbing Dorsey’s ensemble "The General Motors of Music."

Today, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra is directed by trombonist Buddy Morrow and features singer Walt Andrus. The band’s repertoire embraces the classics of the original Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, as well as a spectrum of popular music, from Dixieland and rhythm and blues to progressive jazz and current rock tunes.
