Play, Learn and be Inspired

Looking to hone your drumming and percussion skills? Learn new techniques? Meet other drummers and percussionists? Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 21, 2007 when the Percussive Arts Society hosts its popular “Day of Percussion,” an annual event that brings world-class professional artists together with students and music enthusiasts.

This year’s event, which is expected to attract over 200 students and professionals, features Ed Mann, percussionist for Frank Zappa; Jim Donovan, drummer/percussionist for Rusted Root; Maelstrom Percussion Fusion; Buffalo Philharmonic Percussion section, as well as a host of other national and regional pros performing and giving lessons.

The first 30 people to sign up can join Jim Donovan’s African drumming workshop. All are welcome to try their skills in the “Fastest Hands” drumming competition.

“Students can spend a couple hours or the entire day at the clinic,” says Bob Accurso, percussion teacher, performer and executive director of Maelstrom. “It’s a great opportunity to learn and have fun. Students come back year after year to be part of this supportive and enthusiastic community of percussionists and drummers.

Hands-on clinics and performances begin at 9 a.m. and run until 5:00 p.m. At 8:00 p.m. that evening, the “Maelstrom and Master Drummers Concert” provides a fitting end to the day. The evening concert features Maelstrom Fusion with Ed Mann, as well as a performance of the seminal work for percussion, “Ionisation,” by Edgar Varese, conducted by world-renowned percussionist, Jan Williams. Maelstrom will also give the area’s first performance of “Concertino for Percussion and Concert Band” by noted contemporary composer David Gillingham.

Tickets are $12 at the door; $10 students, seniors, advance sales; Group rates available in advance. For more information call (716) 878-3005 or email ihitstuff@adelphia.net.
