Partnership of Word and Music in a "Poet's Choral Corner"

The Niagara Vocal Ensemble now in its 16th season has established a solid reputation not only for the quality of its performances, but also for the ingenuity and imagination with which its programs are selected and constructed. The partnership of word and music is highlighted in a Poet's Choral Corner, held at St. George's Anglican Church in St. Catharines on Sunday, May 6, 2007 at 3:00 p.m.

Under the direction of founding conductor, Dr. Harris Loewen, the thirteen female voices of the Niagara Vocal Ensemble, accompanied by Lesley Kingham, with commentary by poet Terrance Cox, present settings of lyrical poetry in English by the great poets, from Shakespeare to e. e. cummings.

Through the centuries, many connections have been made between text and music. A Poet's Choral Corner blends music and poetry into a magnificently rich and colourfully varied portrait, as musical lines move with vibrancy and warmth throughout the afternoon performance.

In a program ranging from nostalgic to rapturous to witty, the mix of a cappella and accompanied works, incorporate poetic texts from the 15th to 20th century, with musical settings spanning the 20th century. Texts emphasizing the British poets William Blake, Robert Browning, Alfred Tennyson, Shakespeare, and others, are framed by musical settings by American and Canadian composers.

Canadian contributions include a musical setting of John McCrae's "In Flander's Fields," and music by composers Eleanor Daley, Ruth Watson Henderson, Healey Willan. Work by Niagara-based composers Ronald Tremain (1923-98), and John Butler will also be showcased.

Join Poet's Choral Corner for a splendid concert, at St. George's Anglican Church on Sunday, May 6, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $15, and are available at the Centre for the Arts Box Office, 905-688-5550, ext. 3257, or at the door.
