Dickey Betts & Great Southern Head North! Artpark’s “Tuesday in the Park”
Dickey Betts & Great Southern Head North! Artpark’s “Tuesday in the Park” Hosts Former Allman Brother!
(Lewiston, NY) Dickey Betts has quite an impressive musical resume: a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All-Time and a 1995 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. On July 11, this legend of the six-string and his current band, Great Southern, will showcase an extensive collection of work as the featured act of the “First Niagara Tuesday in the Park at Artpark” free concert series, which starts at 6:30pm.As an original member of the Allman Brothers Band, Betts played an instrumental role in the writing and recording of the band’s greatest musical triumphs – “Ramblin' Man,” “Blue Sky,” “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” and the Grammy Award-winning “Jessica.”Betts’ prolific musical journey began on a fateful March night in 1969 when he and friend Berry Oakley jammed with a local band featuring Duane and Gregg Allman; this marked the birth of the Allman Brothers Band. After Duane Allman and Berry Oakley were killed in motorcycle accidents a year apart in 1971 and 1972, the ABB worked through their sorrow, with Betts writing and singing the group's biggest hit, "Ramblin' Man."Following several reunions and splits, the ABB came together in 1989 to mark their 20th Anniversary. The chemistry that resulted from the unique two-guitar approach of Betts and Warren Haynes once again made the Band one of the most compelling acts in the country. The ABB enjoyed continued success throughout the nineties – being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, winning their first Grammy and amazing audiences with their powerful live performances.A year after the ABB celebrated their 30th Anniversary, Betts formed the Dickey Betts Band and hit the road on his own. Dickey later changed the name of the group to Dickey Betts and Great Southern – which added Dickey’s son Duane on lead guitar in January, 2002. The opening act on July 11 is Pinkeye D’Gekko.Every Tuesday evening event includes a plethora of hands-on art activities for children, which are sponsored by the New York Power Authority. The “First Niagara Tuesday in the Park at Artpark” concert series is also sponsored by Certo Brothers, Sevenson Environmental Services, Modern Corporation and Tim Horton’s.

Artpark Flips the Switch on Independence Day! Annual “Tuesday in the Park” Headliner Rocks July 4th Festivities!
(Lewiston, NY) Switch, the only band selected to perform every year at the “First Niagara Tuesday in the Park at Artpark” concert series since 2001, provides the musical fireworks for Lewiston’s Independence Day celebration, beginning at 6:30pm.Formed in 1973 by lead vocalist and bass player John Connelly, Switch has been the headliner act for the “Tuesday in the Park” season finale each of the past three seasons. With July 4th falling on a Tuesday this year, Artpark officials decided to utilize the band’s wide-appealing range of music, which includes songs from the Beatles, Eagles, Chicago and others, as the central component of Lewiston’s Independence Day festivities. The Village will set off fireworks coinciding with the conclusion of the concert.Over their 33 year span, Switch has evolved into the area’s preeminent cover band while also intertwining original material into their performances. The group, which has been named "one of Western New York's top three show bands over the last twenty years," consists of Connelly (founding member), Steve Connelly (drummer/vocalist), Tom Lorentz (guitar/keyboard/harmonica) and Ken Kaufman (keyboard/piano) as well as a three piece horn section, featuring Michael DiGiacomo, Ray Skalski and Chris Hooten. There will be not be an opening act on July 4 as Switch will entertain concertgoers for the duration of the evening.Every Tuesday evening event also includes a plethora of hands-on art activities for children, which are sponsored by the New York Power Authority. The “First Niagara Tuesday in the Park at Artpark” concert series is also sponsored by Certo Brothers, Sevenson Environmental Services, Modern Corporation and DiMino Lewiston Tops. For more information on Artpark’s 2006 lineup, contact the Box Office at 716-754-4375 or visit www.artpark.net.
